Does TrainAsONE consider the elevation of my target race?

Does TrainAsONE consider the elevation of my target race?

By Dr. Sean Radford 14th January 2024 (Updated 13th January 2026)

The short answer is: Not directly yet, though you can already record this data in your race settings.

While you can enter the anticipated ascent and descent figures for your upcoming races, this information is currently informational only. It does not yet influence the specific workouts generated by the AI, but providing it now ensures your profile is ready as soon as our models are updated to utilize these metrics.

**Why isn't it used for plan generation yet?**

In many coaching circles, it is common to see "rules of thumb" such as "you must climb X meters per week." At TrainAsONE, we avoid these types of arbitrary rules because there is currently no scientific data to prove they are optimal for individual progression.

Instead of using "made-up" targets, we are working on a machine-learning model that uses real-world data to understand exactly how elevation affects performance. Our goal is to ensure that when we do prescribe elevation, it is based on the same mathematical integrity as the rest of your plan.

**How the system helps you anyway**

Even without direct elevation targets, the system is highly effective for hilly races:

  • Implicit Learning: TrainAsONE learns from your actual performance. When you run on hills, your heart rate and pace reflect that increased effort. The AI sees this data and adjusts your plan to ensure your fitness and recovery are on track.

  • Collective Data: Our models learn from thousands of runners training for similar hilly events, meaning an "elevation bias" is already naturally present in the system's logic.

**Practical Advice for Hilly Races**

If you are training for a particularly vertical race, we recommend:

Record the Data: Please do continue to enter the elevation profile in your Race Settings. This provides us with the high-quality data needed to refine our future elevation-aware models.

Terrain Matching: Simply perform your Easy Runs and Long Runs on terrain as similar to your target race as possible.

Specific Training Blocks: Many of our users find great success by taking a "training weekend" in a hilly location during their peak weeks.
