How many times a week should I do strength training while run training?
By Dr. Sean Radford•19th May 2025
For most runners looking to improve running economy and performance, 2-3 strength training sessions per week is the general recommendation and is well-supported by scientific evidence. This frequency allows for sufficient stimulus for adaptation while also enabling adequate recovery, especially when balanced with your running schedule.
During periods of very high running mileage or intensity (like peak marathon training), reducing strength training frequency to once per week might be enough to maintain the benefits you've already gained.
