What is Plyometric Training (PT) and why is it good for runners?

Plyometric Training (PT) consists of explosive, jump-based exercises that train your muscles to produce force very quickly. Think of exercises like hops, bounds, box jumps, and jump squats. The goal is to improve your body's ability to use the "stretch-shortening cycle" (SSC) – where muscles are rapidly stretched then shortened, like a spring.

For runners, plyometrics are beneficial because they:

  • Improve Running Economy (RE): PT enhances RE, particularly at slower to moderate running speeds, by making your strides more efficient.

  • Enhance Stretch-Shortening Cycle (SSC) Function: This allows you to store and release elastic energy more effectively with each footstrike, reducing the muscular effort needed for propulsion.

  • Increase Reactive Strength: This is the ability to quickly switch from absorbing force (landing) to producing force (push-off).

  • Improve Musculo-Tendinous Stiffness: This helps your leg act like a more efficient spring.

It's generally recommended to have a foundational level of strength before starting plyometrics, and to introduce them gradually.
