How do I pause my training plan?

How do I pause my training plan?

By Dr. Sean Radford • 24th February 2022 (Updated 26th October 2026)

If you need a break — a holiday, an illness, a niggle you want to get on top of — you can pause your plan until a date you choose. TrainAsONE holds the pause in view, plans your return, and stops sending you workouts you cannot do.

Pausing your plan

  1. Open your Calendar and click Pause training/injured? in the header. The same control sits on your Training Settings page. Its label follows the state of your plan, so while you are paused it reads Adjust training pause (or Adjust start date on the banner itself).

  2. Enter the date you want to start training again under Pause training until, and click Save.

That is all there is to it: your plan is now paused, and TrainAsONE plans your restart for you.

What you will see while paused

  • A banner at the top of your Dashboard and Calendar: “You have paused your training until 15th May, and so no workouts will be scheduled until then. Your plan will be ready from 8th May, so you can see it before you restart.” It carries Start training now and Adjust start date.
  • A rest-day marker on every day inside the pause, with the date you start training again in its tooltip. Those days carry no padlock, no pencil and no quick actions — there is no workout on them to act on.
  • No workouts before your start date. No upcoming workout emails either, though the email you receive after a run still carries the pause notice.

When your return plan appears

The plan for your return is built in the week before your start date, so you can see what you are coming back to instead of finding an empty calendar. The banner names the exact date it will be ready. (Previously a pause left no plan at all until you restarted.)

Starting back earlier

Press Start training now on the banner, or clear the pause date in the form and save. Your plan is rebuilt from today.

Because it discards the plan already built for your pause date, you are asked to confirm first — and any day locks and per-day rules you set before the pause are not restored.

Things worth knowing

  • A pause clears the days before it. Setting or changing a pause deletes day locks and per-day rules dated before your start date: those days are rest days, so a lock or rule there could never be honoured. A rolling lock is kept, but it does nothing until you restart.
  • Paused days cannot be edited day by day. There is no run on them to lock, skip or re-plan, and asking TrainAsONE to plan one is refused — the day is inside your pause. Move your start date instead.
  • A race inside the pause is rested through. You keep the race, and the pause carries on past it. If you set a pause that runs beyond your next race you will be asked to confirm, because it is usually a mistake; move the start date earlier if you intend to race.
  • Coming back from injury? Record the injury on the same form as the pause, so your first weeks back are also limited to what is safe: see What does a recorded injury change in my plan? and How should I use TrainAsONE when returning from an injury?.

Note: a plan you paused is not the same as a plan we suspend for inactivity. Suspension happens when TrainAsONE has not been used for three weeks — see Why has my plan build been suspended?.
