Should I use pause / auto-pause on my watch / app?

By Dr. Sean Radford 14th February 2022 (Updated 5th February 2026)

For the most accurate analysis of your fitness, we strongly recommend disabling the auto-pause feature and avoiding manual pauses during your runs.

Here’s a breakdown of why this is important and how to manage the common issues that arise from letting your watch run continuously.

Why Pausing Affects Your Analysis

Our system analyses every second of your activity to understand your fitness and how you respond to training. Rest periods - whether waiting at a traffic light or taking a quick break - are crucial data points that show us how your body recovers mid-run.

When you pause your device, it stops recording data entirely. This creates an incomplete file that doesn't reflect the true physical demands of your run, which in turn impacts the accuracy of our analysis. While a run with many pauses might look faster on paper, it doesn't represent a true continuous effort.

Common Concerns & Solutions

We understand that not pausing your device can create a couple of issues. Here’s how to address them:

1. "But it will lower my average pace!"

This is a common concern - including rest time will lower the average pace displayed.

  • Our Solution: We are working on it! As of February 2026, we plan to develop the capability to display both "active" time and "elapsed" time in TrainAsONE, which will resolve this. We appreciate your patience as we work to implement this.

2. "But it messes up my duration-based guided workouts!"

You're right. If you're following a workout step like "run hard for 5 minutes" on a third-party device, any rest time will incorrectly count towards that 5 minutes.

  • You have a few great options:
  • **Use the [TrainAsONE mobile app](https://www.trainasone.com/running-app/):** Our mobile app is designed to handle pauses correctly during guided workouts. If you prefer, you can use the TrainAsONE app for audio cues while simultaneously recording the run on your watch as you normally would. Our system will automatically detect and manage the duplicate activity files, so you don't need to delete anything.
    • Switch to Distance-Based Workouts: In your TrainAsONE settings, you can change your guided workouts to be based on distance (e.g., "run hard for 1km") instead of duration.

    • Pause Sparingly: If you must use a third-party device for duration-based workouts, we recommend only pausing for significant stops (e.g., 2 minutes or longer).

  • Summary of Recommendations

    • For the best analysis: Always run with the pause feature disabled.

    • For guided workouts: Use the TrainAsONE mobile app or switch your workout settings to be distance-based.
